Personal Narrative
· Beowulf, Unferth, and even Grendel struggle to find meaning in their lives. These characters are trying to discover who they are and what they will become. So the question goes to you: how do you find meaning in your life? What keeps you going? What keeps the boredom away (as Grendel would ask)?
Classification Essay
· Our world is full of heroes: be it fictional or real. Identify the various types of heroes in our culture. Think about examples, characteristics, impact, importance, etc. Ultimately, you are developing your own classification system for heroes.
Compare and Contrast
· Heroes represent their culture, and Beowulf was what every young Viking dreamed about becoming. How does Beowulf compare (and contrast) to our cultural icons?
Argumentative
· As we quickly discovered, females roles in Viking stories were not prominent. Do today’s hero stories share the same sexist view? Have they progressed? How can this be linked to our culture’s viewpoint of gender roles?
· How are heroes and their monsters similar?
Definition Essay
· What is a hero? Nothing else to say. Okay, maybe I do. What qualities make up the modern hero? Provide examples from our today’s culture.
